Operating Hours and Travel Restrictions in Ohio

Standard Operating Hours

  • Loads up to 12 feet wide: Permitted to travel 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset, including weekends
  • Loads over 12 feet wide: Allowed until 3 pm on Friday to Sunday from April 1 to November 30

Urban Area Restrictions

Oversized loads or vehicles over 12 feet are prohibited in many Ohio counties during peak hours:

  • 6:30 am – 9 am
  • 4:30 pm – 6 pm
  • Monday through Friday

Holiday Restrictions

  • Oversized loads typically prohibited from noon the weekday before a major holiday until sunrise the following weekday
  • All stops for fuel, food, etc., must be included in the permit

“Oversize Load” signs are mandatory on front and rear for vehicles:

  • Over 10 feet wide
  • Over 14 feet 6 inches in height
  • Exceeding legal length

Flag Protocol

  • All over-dimension vehicles and loads must display flags
  • Flags required at each corner of the vehicle or load
  • Additional flags at the widest part for overwidth loads
  • For rear overhangs of 4 feet or more:
    • One flag at the rear of the overhang
    • Two flags if the overhang is wider than 2 feet

Lighting Guidelines

  • Headlights must be on for all over-dimensional vehicles during movement
  • At night, overhangs must be illuminated
