Operating Hours and Travel Restrictions in Maine

Standard Operating Hours

  • Oversized loads can operate from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset, seven days a week
  • Exception: No weekend travel during July and August

Seasonal and Holiday Restrictions

  • No travel permitted on major holidays or some holiday weekends
  • Weekend travel prohibited in July and August

City-Specific Restrictions

Augusta and Lewiston have special regulations:
  • Travel prohibited during rush hours: 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • No travel during inclement weather
  • Augusta requires a local permit

Maine Turnpike Regulations

  • Load limits: 13 feet 6 inches high and 14 feet 6 inches wide
  • Daylight travel only, Monday through Friday noon
  • No travel permitted on Friday afternoons, Saturdays, or Sundays
  • Toll permit: $10 for loads over width or exceeding 70 feet in length
  • Toll paid at the gate, but Turnpike part of the route is included on the Main O/D permit

Signage Requirements

  • “Oversize Load” signs required on all loads exceeding width and length permits
  • Signs must be mounted on both the front bumper and at the rear of the load

Flag Protocol

  • 18-inch square flags required at the corners of the load and the widest points
  • Overhangs over 4 feet in the rear must be flagged
  • Two flags required if the overhang exceeds 2 feet wide

Lighting Guidelines

  • Headlights must be on low beam and flashing
  • Rotating amber light or bar light required on top of the cab
  • All over-dimension loads must comply with these lighting requirements
  • Overweight-only loads are exempt from these lighting rules
  • Load signs should be removed or covered if the load is not oversized
  • Amber beacon lights should be extinguished before movement if not oversized
