Safety First: Equipment Requirements for Oversize Loads
Signage Requirements
- “Oversize Load” signs required on front of truck and rear of trailer for all oversize loads
- Overweight (but not oversize) vehicles still need “Oversize Load” signs
- Sign specifications:
- Minimum 7 feet wide and 18 inches high
- Black letters on yellow background
- Letters must be at least 10 inches high
- For overhanging loads, additional flagging and warning lights required on the rear
Flag Protocol
- Red or orange safety flags must be attached to every corner of the widest part of the shipment
- Flags also required on the rear of all over-length loads
Lighting Guidelines
- For night travel or areas with reduced visibility:
- Amber lights required on front and sides
- Red lights needed on rear and rear overhangs
- Lights should be placed at the corners of the widest part of the shipment and on load extensions
- All lights must be visible for up to 500 feet
Securing Your Kansas Oversize Permit
Permit Validity and Acquisition
- Kansas oversize permits are valid for seven days
- Permits should generally be obtained before entering the state
- Permits can also be acquired at Ports of Entry (proof of insurance required in the vehicle)
