Indiana’s regulations for oversize loads vary based on vehicle dimensions:

Continuous Travel Allowance

  • Vehicles up to 110 feet in length, 10 feet wide, and 13 feet 6 inches high
  • Weight limit: Less than 200,000 pounds
  • Allowed to travel continuously (24/7)

Extended Daylight Hours

  • Vehicles over 110 feet long, 10 feet to 14 feet 4 inches wide, and up to 15 feet in height
  • Travel permitted seven days a week, from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset

Weekday Travel for Wider Loads

  • Vehicles between 14 feet 4 inches and 16 feet wide
  • Travel allowed Monday through Friday, 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset

Restricted Hours for Exceptionally Large Loads

  • Vehicles over 16 feet wide, 15 feet high, or 200,000 pounds
  • Typically allowed to travel from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm any day, excluding weekends

Signage Requirements

  • Required for loads greater than 10 feet wide, 14 feet 6 inches high, and/or 75 feet long
  • Sign specifications:
    • At least 18 inches high and between 6 and 8 feet long
    • Black letters on yellow background
    • Letters must be 12 inches tall, with a 2-inch brush stroke
  • Out-of-state vehicles may use signs approved by their home state

Flag Protocol

  • Two red or orange flags required at the widest extremities of the vehicle or load
  • Flags must be:
    • In good condition
    • Plain with no figures
    • 18 inches square
    • Placed for maximum visibility to approaching traffic

Lighting Guidelines

  • Every oversize and overweight permit load must have:
    • Well-displayed, functioning amber light(s) on the tractor
    • Lights must be oscillating, rotating, or flashing
    • Placed at the outer edges, at least 6 feet above the roadway
  • Front lights:
    • Mounted on the towing vehicle at the furthest extreme of any safety device
    • Must not extend beyond the mirrors
    • Double-faced lamps visible from front and rear
  • Visibility requirement: Lights must be visible from 500 feet in normal sunlight
  • Low-beam headlights must be on during transport
  • Special requirements for mobile homes and sectionalized buildings:
    • Widths of 12 feet 4 inches or more require four high-intensity, amber flashing lights
    • Two mounted on the front, two on the rear of the combination
