Operating Hours and Travel Restrictions in Illinois

Illinois has specific regulations for oversize loads based on dimensions and weight:

Standard Operating Hours

  • For loads up to 14’6″ wide, 15′ high, 145′ long, and 120,000 lbs (or 100,000 lbs on 5 axles):
    • Seven days a week
    • From 30 minutes before sunrise until 30 minutes after sunset
  • For loads exceeding these dimensions:
    • Weekdays (Monday through Friday): 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset
    • Saturdays: 30 minutes before dawn until noon
  • Continuous travel allowed for overweight loads if all other dimensions are legal

Regional Restrictions

Special considerations for certain areas and load sizes:
  • Cook County Expressways: Maximum 120,000 lbs and 12′ wide, or 13’6″ high
  • Loads 14’6″ to 16′ wide: Limited to 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday in Cook, DuPage, Lake, Kane, Madison, McHenry, Monroe, St. Clair, and Will counties
  • Additional restrictions may apply for loads over 16′ wide

Holiday Restrictions

No travel allowed on major holidays and holiday weekends, starting at noon the day before a holiday.

Toll Road Regulations

  • Maximum width: 10 feet (12 feet on I-80 near Indiana and US51 near Wisconsin)
  • Weight-based fees:
    • 80,001 to 104,000 lbs: $35.00
    • 104,001 to 120,000 lbs: $150.00
  • Loads over 100 feet long require prior approval and a special permit
  • Height over 13’6″ incurs an extra $15.00 fee (maximum 14’6″)

  • “Oversize Load” signs required for loads over 10′ wide, 14’6″ high, or 75′ long

Flag Protocol

  • Flags required on all extremities of oversize vehicles, loads, and protruding objects

  • Operable amber lights required on all oversized and overweight permitted loads
  • Lights must be oscillating, rotating, or flashing
  • Visible from 500 feet, even in daylight, on both front and back
  • For loads over 80′ long or 100′ combined: second light mounted 10′ from rear, high and visible

    • Semi-annual repeated crossing of state-maintained roads
