Operating Hours and Travel Restrictions in Florida

Standard Operating Hours

  • Oversize loads are permitted to travel from one-half hour before sunrise until noon on Saturdays and Sundays
  • Nighttime travel is prohibited for oversized loads
  • Larger loads are restricted to daytime travel only

Weather-Related Restrictions

All vehicles, even those compliant with permits and regulations, are subject to movement restrictions during certain weather events:

  • Snow, ice, and fog can halt operations
  • Any conditions hindering drivers’ view of other vehicles or pedestrians within 500 feet will disallow movement

Holiday Restrictions

Oversize load travel is not permitted on the following holidays:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Independence Day
  • Christmas
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Labor Day

Safety First: Equipment Requirements for Oversize Loads

Signage Requirements

  • Required for all oversized loads surpassing 10 feet wide or 14 feet tall
  • “OVERSIZE LOAD” signs must be displayed on the front and rear of the truck
  • Signs must not obstruct headlights or license plates
  • Sign specifications:
    • Yellow background with black lettering
    • 7 feet wide and 18 inches high
    • Letters should be 12 inches high with a 1.5″ brushstroke for optimal visibility

Flag Protocol

  • Flags required at each corner of the load
  • Flag specifications:
    • 18 inches square
    • Fluorescent orange or red
  • Escort vehicle flags should be placed on the roof at a 40-70 degree angle
  • Four flags should be present on all four corners of oversize loads and on other overhangs

Lighting Guidelines

  • Lights should be high set
  • Must emit a flash or strobe
  • Should rotate 360 degrees
  • Visible from 500 feet away in normal weather conditions
