Operating Hours and Travel Restrictions in Oklahoma

Standard Operating Hours

  • Oversize loads: Daylight hours only (30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset, seven days a week)
  • Overweight vehicles: May request continuous travel when ordering the permit

Urban Area Restrictions

Oversize load movements are prohibited on the Interstate system through Cleveland, Oklahoma, and Tulsa counties:

  • 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
  • 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
  • Monday through Friday
  • Note: This restriction does not apply to overweight-only vehicles

Holiday Restrictions

No permit travel is allowed on major holidays.

Turnpike Regulations

  • Loads up to 9 feet 6 inches wide: Permitted without a Pike Pass
  • Loads 9 feet 6 inches to 11 feet 6 inches wide (up to 13 feet 6 inches wide on Cherokee Turnpike only): Require a Pike Pass reference number
  • Maximum weight for turnpikes: 108,000 lbs
  • Weight is paid for on the state permit; no extra charge above usual per axle charge on turnpikes

Safety First: Equipment Requirements for Oversize Loads

Signage Requirements

  • “Oversize Load” signs required on front of tractor and rear of load/trailer (whichever extends farthest)
  • Also required on two-lane highways when load exceeds 59-1/2 feet in length

Flag Protocol

  • Flags required at the widest point of an oversize load
  • Rear overhang of 4 feet or more must be flagged
  • Flag specifications:
    • Solid red or fluorescent orange
    • At least 18 inches by 18 inches
    • Placed at the four corners of the vehicle/load and on extremities

Lighting Guidelines

  • Required only for vehicles traveling after dark (1/2 hour after sunset to 1/2 hour before sunrise)
  • Must be visible from a minimum of 500 feet
  • Steady burning lights required
  • Lights at the back of the vehicle/load and extremities near the back must be red
